A Cowhide Rug Accident With a Happy Ending

So I’ve had the cowhide rug itch for several months now. Not sure why. Just one of those things I do where I wake up one morning and think crazy things like that, and then need it immediately. It’s a sickness.

Anyway…

This is the new cowhide rug that almost didn’t happen.

I was browsing around online for a while and found one I really liked during one of Joss & Main’s sales, and thought it would work in our living room. This is the one I thought I was ordering.

Dark Brown Cowhide Rug | www.decorchick.com

I know you’re thinking that’s a lot of dark brown and black that would be in our living room because of the leather furniture, but there is a new sofa on the way that is not brown leather, so that is what I kept in mind.

But when I received it, it clearly was not the same.

But, it was definitely a happy accident because I love the “wrong” one. Maybe Joss & Main was looking out for me. ;)

And it didn’t occur to me that you’d probably see every speck of junk on that darker one, so I’m happy the junk can be hidden deep within the light cow hair and no one will ever know.

And yes this is a real cow.

Cowhide-Rug

It was kind of a creepy feeling at first but it only lasted about 5 minutes.

Would I have thought I’d ever have a cowhide rug? No. But my taste changes and sometimes I get wild and like to do something a little out of the ordinary. I do love the layered look of it on our big area rug!

And I couldn’t just get a cow and leave out the sheep, so here’s a fun little sheepskin throw thing from Ikea.

It’s kind of crazy right?

And then I also love this black and white striped throw, also found at Ikea.

I really love Ikea even more when you don’t have to put stuff together.

So that’s it for a few new additions in the living room. The ottoman you guys all saw in my Christmas home tour post, but it was a clearance deal from Marshall’s. I had been eyeing it for months and happened to go there on the right day. Love when that happens!

Oh also, Ikea does have some pretty cowhides too that I saw the other day–decently priced for the size as well. The one we have is 6×7.

What do you think of cowhides and the new living room additions? Oh, p.s.-paint color is Sherwin Williams Balanced Beige. I swear I will do a paint color post this year. Hold me to it!

xxoo,

Love the “mistake!” It looks really good. I’m not sure the dark one would’ve looked as good layered on top of your existing rug, but this one is a winner!

I have been following your blog religiously for the past several months and love most of what you do, but I honestly think cowhide rugs and sheepskin throws (and leather couches) are frivolous and harmful, not only to the animals who are tortured and raised in horrific conditions to get such things, but also to us as humans. Animal production for our consumption is wreaking havoc on our environment, which affects each and every one of us. Please consider watching this important film to learn more about why animals should be treated with compassion, not turned into decoration: http://earthlings.com/?page_id=32. And thanks for being open to all points of view.

I really like the “happy mistake” cowhide rug. The colors are perfect for your room and what a wonderful way to “recycle” items from our environment. I’ve not thought of using a cowhide rug for my home but I’m certainly going to look into it as I make new changes in the next few months. Can’t wait to see your new couch when it arrives.

O.K. you live in Texas, so a cowhide kind of goes with the history of cattle ranches. I too have seen them in Ikea. Your room looks nice. I have a color on my living room wall similar to yours called ” weathered oak”, it seems to take in different colors, just like old barn wood. I always feel blessed too when I find something on sale that I have wanted for a long time.

I am there with you…LOL…been itching for one too. Worldmarket has one for $350 I like a lot…..but is it slippery on the floor? I am also falling for all the fur throws lately. Love the look in your room. Christine from Little Brags

I really like the lighter coloring of the cow you received! I’ve never seen one like it and it’s really pretty with the rest of your room. I’ve been looking around at them too but what I really want is one of those fluffy white sheep like rugs! I assume we’ll be seeing a new sofa soon? LOL! Hugs, Leena

2 months later, and it’s still hard. So very har 2 months later, and it’s still hard. So very hard. It is the strangest, most emptiest feeling one could have, and one that not everyone understands.

Tonight was the 3rd griefshare meeting that I’ve attended, and that does help to be around others who have lost someone close. But it is also so painful hearing their stories. And it’s a night during the week that I’m forced to think about how he’s no longer here. It’s helped me to realize all of the thoughts and actions we have are normal, and the things we do that are odd to others, are actually part of the process.

I haven’t been able to wear these shirts of his yet (he wore them every single day. The red one was his “fancy” one), but I’m glad I have them. It’s just really crappy I can’t see him in them any longer. 💔

This is a pain like no other. I watched him take This is a pain like no other.

I watched him take his final breath at 7:24 this morning. The scent of him is still so palpable.

Gone too soon, and years stolen from his wife and grandkids.

We live in the same small neighborhood, right around the corner on the next street. Now the girls can’t ride their 4-wheelers to go see him. We can’t just swing by to pick him up. He can’t go on our walks anymore. There are lots of no-longers, and it is crushing my heart.

Who am I going to call now when I have a question on how to fix something? He had a solution for everything usually saving us hundreds of dollars. Everything was fixable to him, rather than hiring someone. And often he would find the answer on YouTube.

Who am I going to text with when the Astros make a good or bad play during the next World Series?

I want to hear his voice again. I want to go over and cut his hair again. I want to make him another pie for his birthday and Father’s Day.

It hurts so much.

I love you Daddy.
