Seriously, I had a life changing event occur last week. I finished the Shoot Fly Shoot Photography 101 classes and wow oh wow did I learn a lot. I actually LEARNED how to use my DSLR camera that I’ve been using a few years now.
I always thought I knew what I was doing, but nope! I just kept moving buttons around until the picture looked ok to me. So yea, every time you look at an old post of mine, the pictures are awful, and I mean awful. I think I am getting better, but now, I am super excited to photograph my projects and home because I actually understand what I am doing.
So what is Shoot Fly Shoot? No stranger to the blog world, Kevin Palmer from The Lettered Cottage, and his friend Josh are the founders of Shoot Fly Shoot. They just wanted to create very easy, understandable, hands-on videos to teach us all how to use our cameras in manual mode.
What’s awesome is the fact how hands-on it is. And I love the way they describe what they are doing in GREAT detail. I’ve read many photography tutorials on the internet before, but it wasn’t until I took their class until I FULLY understood Aperture, ISO, Metering, Exposure, etc. meant. I’ve heard the term “depth of field” several times, and now I get it! Something just clicked and I don’t know what it was. Well I do know what it was–they just spoke like regular guys and left out all of the fancy talk. Haha. But after they explained what they were talking about, then they actually SHOWED you what they had just explained. I’m telling you, it just clicked in my noggin’.
Their classes are amazing and I know you will thank me for telling you. The classes are all broken into separate short videos too, which is even greater. So you can just watch them at your leisure and stop and start whenever you’d like.
You’ll learn how to take interior shots and outdoor shots and I was so happy about the outdoor shots video. I learned what time of day is good to shoot and when not to shoot. What background is good, and not good–I could go on and on.
I was so excited when I got done watching that I immediately got out my camera and started snapping pictures of my daughter Emma. Please note you do NOT have to have a fancy lens like Kevin says. You can take great shots with the lens your camera came with!
When I was taking these pictures, I was using my 50mm lens (which is only a $100 lens), and totally worth it. It takes great pictures and you are able to get those really blurry and bokeh pictures. So please take note of what’s in focus, and what’s blurred in Emma’s photos.
I think they came out so pretty, and it was so fulfilling knowing I was taking a picture in manual mode with the right settings. Ha!
I’m still no expert by any means, but I do believe my photography will get better from here on out on the blog. I’m pretty excited to actually photograph something now–guess I better finish a project eh?
Anyway, also, if you have ever wanted to learn Photoshop Elements, they also have classes on that for beginners that you can buy as well.
- “The price of Photography 101 is $69 and the entire training class is almost 3 hours in length.
- Photography 101 is made up of 11 separate videos- all shot by us, on a Canon 5D DSLR camera, but don’t feel like you have to watch the classes all at once. Take your time, and enjoy the process because once you purchase Photography 101, you’ll have access to the videos and any Photography 101-related updates we add to our site, forever!”
You can click the button to order and learn more info.
Are y’all excited? I can’t say enough good things about the photography class but I’m sure you have gathered that by now. For real though, if you are wanting/needing to learn how to use that fancy camera of yours and get it off the auto button, then take these classes now! :)

I also took the class and it was a game changer! I’ve been taking some amazing pictures and loving every minute of it! I’m a huge fan of Layla and her blog, so naturally I figured I would like a class given by Kevin!! I have watched a few the tutorials 5-6 times, each time I pick up on a tip I missed the times before!
