A Winter Mantel

Transitioning your Christmas decor into winter decor can be a bit tricky, but if you just do what you think is pretty, then it will work. :) That’s what I did with my winter mantel this year.

I kept most everything from my Christmas mantel on there, but just added a mirror that I got from the Christmas clearance at Michael’s for $15.  Why was that a holiday item anyway??  Then I just added accessories I had from around the house until I liked the way it looked.  The glass votive holders are from the dollar store and so are the floral leafy stems.

I propped up the painted and stamped book next to the Ballard inspired stacked books.

Now just enjoy the photos. :)

I think this is my favorite mantel thus far!  It still looks a little wintery but not Christmasy.  At least I hope so? :)

How is your transitional decor coming along?  Just do what you like instead of following the rules.  That’s my motto at least. :)

It was crazy marked down. I got a different one for our master that I’ll show soon too. Can’t believe they were Christmas markdowns!

I love all the sparkly, wintry decor, but isn’t “screaming” Christmas. I was able to get some of the Michael’s decor also – most of it didn’t even seem “holiday-ish” – but SCORE for us, right?

    Beautiful job!

      Yes, total score. Thank you!

Looks nice! I’m always confounded by mantel decorating, since at my house, the fireplace is centred between two large windows — add to much and the whole wall looks cluttered, yet not enough and it looks unfinished.

You’re not alone. I’m in the same situation…fireplace stuck right between two large windows. Other than Christmas, I have no idea what to do with it.

    I like your winter look!

I decorate to please myself…no rules…no decorating police to say this isn’t the “in” thing – I am the one paying the bills and the one enjoying the result of my projects….I don’g mean to sound harsh but I feel decorating should be a personal thing.

So pretty! And you gave me a couple ideas for my mantel. As of right now I’ve just left out everything that I had in my Christmas display that wasn’t blatantly Christmas (pinecones, wrought-iron deer, etc.). I figure that should last me until March and I can be a lazy decorator until then. :-)

Looks beautiful, and I don’t get “Christmas” from it at all. This decor benefits from the early nightfall because it reflects lights well. I don’t usually switch out decor seasonally because I’m too lazy but your inspired design almost makes me want to. Almost :). Maybe one day I’ll gear up and do it.

hi….love your mantel! I currently have no fireplace or mantel, but love the look of yours and was wondering what distance from the floor is your mantel? I’ve toyed with a few different ideas, but they all seem to high or to low. I’m only 5′ so pretty much what is comfortable for me is going to look awkward! thanks in

I LOVE this … the shutters, your letter, and the mercury vases. It’s perfect for winter (actually, the whole year)!! And, I can’t believe that you got that mirror for only $15 !! I bought three of them (you can see them in my Christmas bedroom post) from Michael’s. I spied them in August, but was not about to pay $80! I did get then for 40% off and another 20, but not nearly as good of a deal that you got!

2 months later, and it’s still hard. So very har 2 months later, and it’s still hard. So very hard. It is the strangest, most emptiest feeling one could have, and one that not everyone understands.

Tonight was the 3rd griefshare meeting that I’ve attended, and that does help to be around others who have lost someone close. But it is also so painful hearing their stories. And it’s a night during the week that I’m forced to think about how he’s no longer here. It’s helped me to realize all of the thoughts and actions we have are normal, and the things we do that are odd to others, are actually part of the process.

I haven’t been able to wear these shirts of his yet (he wore them every single day. The red one was his “fancy” one), but I’m glad I have them. It’s just really crappy I can’t see him in them any longer. 💔

I watched him take his final breath at 7:24 this morning. The scent of him is still so palpable.

Gone too soon, and years stolen from his wife and grandkids.

We live in the same small neighborhood, right around the corner on the next street. Now the girls can’t ride their 4-wheelers to go see him. We can’t just swing by to pick him up. He can’t go on our walks anymore. There are lots of no-longers, and it is crushing my heart.

Who am I going to call now when I have a question on how to fix something? He had a solution for everything usually saving us hundreds of dollars. Everything was fixable to him, rather than hiring someone. And often he would find the answer on YouTube.

Who am I going to text with when the Astros make a good or bad play during the next World Series?

I want to hear his voice again. I want to go over and cut his hair again. I want to make him another pie for his birthday and Father’s Day.

It hurts so much.

I love you Daddy.
