A Magic Pill

Do you sleep?  This magic pill is something that is good for you and something your body needs that you may not be getting enough of (I know I don’t).  And that something would be this:

Why am I telling you this today?  Well because when I find out something that’s cool, pretty, a good deal, or in this case, something that may help you, I like to share it with you all!

So let me give you the low-down on why I am even talking about Magnesium today.  I love to sleep.  Like, really LOVE sleeping.  I sleep as much as I can and take a nap pretty much every day if possible.  But for several months now, I haven’t been able to sleep at night and it is so frustrating for me.  I have never had that problem. My brain doesn’t shut off and a million things are going through my mind when my head hits the pillow, which again, never used to be a problem.  I wake up several times during the night and at least 1 of those times it’s to sleepwalk into the kitchen for a snack.  Which again, very frustrating. And obviously with waking up as much as I do during the night, I naturally feel like crap when I wake up in the morning because my body didn’t rest well.

So at my wits end the other day, I called up my cousin Rachael who’s a nurse, and my brother-in-law Greg who’s a chiropractor, begging them to tell me what I can take so I can sleep soundly again, because I really miss sleeping. I don’t really like taking over the counter or prescription meds so I was happy when they both told me to take Magnesium at night when I go to bed. A natural mineral and something that our bodies need!

And in doing a bit of research about Magnesium, there are several health benefits of course, but sure enough it’s used to treat insomnia, and helps to relax you if you have anxiety.  It also helps with headaches!  Greg wrote an article about Magnesium if you’d like to check it out too, and he goes into more detail about the benefits of it.  I’ve only taken it 2 nights so far, and amazingly, I’ve slept both nights without waking up.  And I even felt rested in the morning.  So that’s why I’m so excited to share this with y’all because I know I’m not the only one out there who has trouble sleeping.

I bought mine at Walgreen’s, nothing fancy, and since this brand was buy 1 get 1 free, I also got this,

Just in case I’m feeling the urge to sleep exceptionally well. ;)  It’s ok to even take a melatonin and a magnesium if you wish. I haven’t tried it yet, but I will. Maybe tonight.

Now of course I’m no doctor or anything, so consult with your physician first before taking any of these especially if you are taking other medication (that sounds like a commercial huh?).  Or you could just be a rebel like me, either will work. :)

So, do you sleep, and do you sleep good?  I really need to get better about taking vitamins in general.

xxoo,

Decorchick!

I have the same problem that you describe–my brain not being able to turn off at night. I call it “radiohead”. the thoughts just keep coming and coming! (Although, I’ve “written” more than one blog post in my head while trying to fall asleep, so it’s not all bad!) I have heard of melatonin but not magnesium. I’ve never tried either, but perhaps I will. Thanks for the info.

This is the most perfectly timed blog post EVER! I haven’t slept in weeks. Literally 2-3 hours a night max and I’m completely and totally exhausted. Another friend is having the same problem and just last night on FB I was telling her about the Melatonin. My sister takes it and it works beautifully for her. I didn’t know about Magnesium being good for this as well though. Thanks for the info. A trip to Walgreen’s is most definitely on my To Do list today. Happy Sleeping!

Oh goodness Leigh, I’m so sorry! 2-3 hours is not good at all. Sounds like you may need to take the Magnesium and the melatonin together for a double dose. :) Good luck and I really hope this helps you!

I’m right there with you Leigh, I’m lucky to get a full 4 hours sleep at a time. My brain refuses to shut down, great information. I did take a melatonin last night and it still took me from 10:30 pm to 2 am to get to sleep. I’m exhausted all the time and now sporting dark circles under my eyes. So tired, I’m going to try them together. Thanks!

I think maybe I shall switch to taking it at bedtime and hopefully two problems solved at once!! Oh and the Melatonin and I are good old friends!! Thanks for the info!!!!

Wow, I’ve never heard that. I just recently bought some melatonin after hearing several friends say they love it, it kept me up all night! I have the weirdest system. I can’t take anything at night, it always has the opposite effect on me. Even things like Nyquil that others say will know them out, have me awake all night. I’m at least going to try the Magnesium and see. I’ve never been a good sleeper. I envy people who can fall asleep quickly & sleep deeply. My friends in college would laugh at me because they could walk into the room silently & I would wake up.

Just a heads up on melatonin – depression symptoms can worsen for some people that take melatonin. Not all, but some so please be careful. I tried taking melatonin years ago for help with sleeping but found my depression getting worse. I’m definitely going to try the magnesium!

Magnesium is also wonderful for headaches. I got a bottle (same kind actually) at Walgreens for my husband. He is a student and is going into the physical therapy field so he is constantly studying aka..reading and looking at a computer screen. He would normally get 2 headaches a week. I got him the magnesium and he has been taking it about a month now and has only had 1 headache!! So glad it helps with your sleeping.. and if headaches are a prob..they should subside as well!!

My doctor, who happens to be THE TOP neurologist in Chicago, just told me to add this to my regime for my migraines, sleeping problems and muscle tightness. I hope this continues to help you and hoping it does the same for me. Thanks for the info.

I’ll have to try magnesium. I’ve tried melatonin in the past but I’m so inconsistant I can’t say if it helped or not. I haven’t slept well for a long time but with traveling lately and being in a strange bed every other night for the past 2 weeks who knows what the cause is. Home in a few days so the trial will begin. Thanks for the tip!

I give my little boy a tiny dose of melatonin (crushed into applesauce) every night before bed. With it, he goes to sleep in a normal amount of time. Without it, it takes him HOURS to go to sleep. Yuck!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have maybe had a handful of nights that I slept soundly and didn’t wake up in the past few years. With my husband gone on deployment, those nights are even fewer and farther in between and add the stress and anxiety of school and life.. I can’t tell you how excited I am that you shared this! I, too, need to be taking my vitamins on a more regular basis. I have my women’s multi vitamin and then I also take fish oil pills during the school year to keep from getting sick. Thank you so much for sharing!!

My husband is in Med school and Melotin works WONDERS for sleep. The best part is that it is all natural and something your body already makes, but taking just one gives you the extra help to get a really good nights rest. He uses it when he has to work the night shift at the hospital and needs to sleep in the day.

Magnesium is a very important nutrient for many things; sleeping, muscle pain and fatigue and can even help those with fibromyalgia. But what is even more effective than taking this orally, (which means it goes thru your digestive system) is to rub Magnesium Oil on your body, this will go right into your blood stream for faster and more effective results. Be careful of too much mag. as it can give you diareha.

  27. SheilaG says

    July 22, 2011 at 8:23 pm

I’ve been taking magnesium for about 3 months for migraines, didn’t realize it was the reason I’m also sleeping better! However, the magnesium I bought from Target didn’t work at all for me. After more research, I discovered that magnesium citrate works much better- I order it from Amazon. One caveat, though- magnesium citrate is what is used (in liquid form) as a “clean out” before colonoscopy, if you know what I mean. Calcium will balance out that effect, because it tends to constipate. Too much info? Sorry…. :) Anyhoo, glad you found an easy fix for your insomnia!

  28. Jenny says

    July 22, 2011 at 9:07 pm

I am going to get some more tomorrow! My doc had put me on it to help with PMDD (super severe PMS) and to help with depression. I was taking it and calcium (also helps with depression) and Vitamin D. Once I ran out of it, I quit taking it. I am going to start again tomorrow because I have been sleeping like K-rap lately. Assuming it’s the beginning of menopause, but I am a sleep lover and I cannot go without getting more than I am getting now!

    Thanks for sharing your solution!

I have also tried magnesium but like all herbs it takes a while. But my magic pill is the lavender lotion from bath and body works. Works like a charm! I keep it by my bed and rub it into my hands and forearms just before laying down and I sleep through the night, something peri-menopause doesnt really let you do.

    Good night all!

Wow all these years I’ve suffered from insomnia. I survived high school on 2 hours of sleep a night! Now I’m up to anywhere from 4-6 hrs & it’s not refreshing when I wake up. Sleep aids don’t help since I still wake up & never feel rested. So I’ll give this a try since my doctors never even address my sleeplessness or anxiety. Thanks!

I have suffered migraines since I was 7 years old. In fact, I was diagnosed with children’s migraines. I was on every kind of preventative meds, etc. etc. Finally as an adult, I was sick of medicines. I went to an alternative health store, and they told me many migraine sufferers were low in magnesium. I started taking magnesium that day. I went from 3-4 migraines per week down to maybe 1 every month or two. I LOVE MAGNESIUM!!!!!!!

Wow! I wish I’d read your post this morning because I just bought some over-the-counter sleeping pills today. I, too, have been having trouble sleeping lately and while at the pharmacy thought I’d pick some up. However, my husband was a little leery about taking them and I was, too, but I was desperate to try anything that would help me sleep better. Now I know I just needed some Magnesium!! I’m definitely going to start taking it; it sounds like it has several benefits that my body could use right now. Thanks for turning me on to this natural supplement that I know I’ll feel better about taking! Your post couldn’t have come at a better time!!

I just have to report that I have started taking both of these together. Melatonin wasn’t doing anything for me alone, now together with the magnesium I am sleeping like a rock. My restless legs seem to be calming down as well which allows me to sleep better. I’m thrilled to wake in the morning to realize I haven’t been up all night receiving less than 4 hours of sleep.
