Easy DIY Crate Shelf or Shadowbox

Hey everyone, I have a quick and easy project that I did for Ellie’s room and I think it turned out so cute! And you can use this in so many ways so it is super functional.  So come and meet my crate shelf (or shadowbox)!

DIY Crate

So cute right?  I decided to make Ellie’s more of a shadowbox with some mementos from her first few days of being born. :)

This project was so easy because I bought the crate already put together, and unfinished so I could do what I wanted with it.  I got mine at Michael’s and I think I paid $9 or $10 with my 50% off coupon.  BTW- Don’t pass up those woodworking aisles at your craft stores. They have tons of cool things like this that you can paint and stain!

Unfinished Crate

Totally worth buying it put together already. I’m short on time these days!

Then I stained it with some Dark Walnut stain I already had.

Stained Crate

I just brushed it on with a cheap foam brush then wiped off the excess with a lint free rag. So easy and it only took me about 10 or 15 minutes to do the whole thing.

DIY Crate

So pretty right?

Then I just hung it up on her wall with 2 nails then put the items I wanted in there inside. Have I said how easy this was yet??

Baby Hat

That is the hat she wore in the hospital that the nurse made into a “bow hat” and then the onesie she wore home from the hospital. :)

I added a picture of her and Emma in here in a frame that we received as a gift from our neighbors.

Sisters Picture

And a few more…

What do you think? I like that it’s a different way to display things, the crate hanging on the wall is a bit unexpected, and it’s just cool. :) I think I’m going to add a few more to this wall too. I haven’t fully decided yet but they would be cool as shelving for her books. So many options!  And of course if you don’t want to hang this on the wall, you could just buy the crate already made then stain or paint it what you want, and do what you wish with it!  Store magazines, blankets, toilet paper…anything goes. Actually, that’s what I’m going to do next…make one to use as a toilet paper holder because we don’t have one. :)

What would you use it for?

xxoo,

Cute idea and adorable girls! I’m a homeschool mom and we have LOTS of books! I’ve used these crates to “extend” bookshelves. I painted them black to match our bookshelves, places them on the top of the shelves an voila an extra shelf for books, games, etc…

This is such a great idea — it turned out adorable! I love the toilet paper-holder idea, too — or maybe even for hand towels in a bathroom or powder room! :-)

Love that you nailed it right into the wall–that’s exactly how I roll! And it would probably look really neat if you did several together up on the wall. I’ll have to remember that!

2 labradoodle puppies were NOT on my 2026 vision board, but here we are.🥰

It was my first time going with Randy to one of hi It was my first time going with Randy to one of his gigs. This wasn’t just any gig though. It was a very special wedding for a beautiful couple.❤️

And after witnessing firsthand what all he does for events like this, I have a new appreciation for what he does because it is a LOT.🤯

From loading in setting up three PA systems in 3 separate areas, then immediately switching gears to performance mode and playing ceremony music + sax, dinner music + MC’ing, then reception DJ’ing + sax. It was really pretty freaking mind-blowing to be honest. And then you have to tear it all down! Talk about a full day (I felt hungover the next day and I don’t even drink), but if you are in the entertainment business you get it. And he does this multiple times a month!

So many moving parts, and being flexible when you need to switch gears at the last minute, and he handles it with so much ease. That’s why he’s the professional at his craft.🫶

I was just there more as his emotional support person, but would love to do more events with him where I’m actually useful. 🤪Maybe I’ll learn to wrap up cords the right way one day to his liking, but that’s doubtful. 🤣

It was the perfect new year’s day and can’t wait to do it again!❤️

Congrats @claudine.said and @chefaustinsimmons it was a JOY witnessing your special day.

3 years without Daddy and Pawpaw💔 Does life mo 3 years without Daddy and Pawpaw💔

Does life move on?

Yes, but not without a hazy fog lingering over you that never fully lifts.

Not without the deep ache in your heart longing for more time.

Not without reaching for your phone wanting to call or text.

Not without the family gatherings knowing someone is missing, even though no one mentions it.

Not without crying when you think of him or look at old photos.

I still cannot talk about him without tearing up. Certain songs or sayings break me.

After losing a parent, everything looks different. Time with your family begins to feel more intentional, because you want the moments to last.

The hustle feels less important, because you realize your people matter more than any dollar amount.

Grief and gratitude can coexist. It’s okay to be sad, and it’s okay to be thankful for a dad who is worth missing.❤️
