Dollar Store hurricanes

Have you seen these candle holders from Williams Sonoma before?  Aren’t they pretty?  Way too pricey though.   Here is a knock off version that will cost you only $2 to make!

I first saw this idea from Get Your Martha On when she made her version here.  They looked so beautiful so I just had to try it.

The only thing I did differently was get the hurricanes at the dollar store instead of Walmart.  The ones at Walmart are bigger and look great, but I just wasn’t up for waiting in line for 30 minutes fighting the crowd, so the Dollar Store it was!

First get your hurricanes and glass candlesticks.  Remember, get all of this from the dollar store.  Never underestimate the power of a dollar. :)

Then put some gorilla glue on the candlestick and stick to the bottom of hurricane.  You could use hot glue too, but it will eventually come off.  I’ve tried it before.

Then try and be patient and let the glue sit for a while.  It’s heavy duty stuff.

While you are waiting, maybe you could catch up on reading a few good books.

Then you have this when it’s all dry.

You like?

Then just fill them with whatever you want to use.  You can use any vase filler, rocks, candy, candles, anything.  If you use candles, I would suggest putting some sand or rocks on the bottom before you drop in the candle.  Trust me.

I decorated mine with dollar store rocks, sand, and jute.  I had the seashell and vase filler stuff already.

Here they are with some of my other glass things on my entry table.

Love glass!!  And that is my cheese dome cloche I made that I have the hurricanes displayed by.  In case you missed that post you can read that here.

You can’t beat the price of this project being $2.  I’ll take that any day!

*Update – click here to see another version of the hurricanes with the flared glass that I love even more.

xxoo,

Okay…so I couldn’t resist asking, Why is it important to add something before the candle? What will happen without it?

    • Decorchick! says

      July 16, 2010 at 11:01 pm

Well, it will be really hard to get the wax out once you are done with the candle. And if you use one that’s not slender enough, it will melt around the sides and just make a big mess. I used pillar candles that fit the jar before, and it just kind of melted in the hurricane. So if you put some sand or rocks in first, your clean up will be much easier! And use a slender candle. Maybe just a little fatter than a taper candle. :)

I made some last night! I bought 2 hurricanes at the Dollar Tree. They have 2 sizes now and one thick big stubby nice one at the Thrift store for $1.49 and the glass candle sticks from the Thrift store 2 just like the ones you have in the photo for 50 Cents each and one big fat one for $1.49 for the thicker hurricane. I used E6000 glue and they look great. That glue dries clear and the glass looks welded together. Not like you are going to see it when you place your trinkets or candles in them. I want to make more! They would be really cute for a candy bar at a party or wedding! Just add pretty tags and ribbon!

2 months later, and it’s still hard. So very har 2 months later, and it’s still hard. So very hard. It is the strangest, most emptiest feeling one could have, and one that not everyone understands.

Tonight was the 3rd griefshare meeting that I’ve attended, and that does help to be around others who have lost someone close. But it is also so painful hearing their stories. And it’s a night during the week that I’m forced to think about how he’s no longer here. It’s helped me to realize all of the thoughts and actions we have are normal, and the things we do that are odd to others, are actually part of the process.

I haven’t been able to wear these shirts of his yet (he wore them every single day. The red one was his “fancy” one), but I’m glad I have them. It’s just really crappy I can’t see him in them any longer. 💔

This is a pain like no other. I watched him take This is a pain like no other.

I watched him take his final breath at 7:24 this morning. The scent of him is still so palpable.

Gone too soon, and years stolen from his wife and grandkids.

We live in the same small neighborhood, right around the corner on the next street. Now the girls can’t ride their 4-wheelers to go see him. We can’t just swing by to pick him up. He can’t go on our walks anymore. There are lots of no-longers, and it is crushing my heart.

Who am I going to call now when I have a question on how to fix something? He had a solution for everything usually saving us hundreds of dollars. Everything was fixable to him, rather than hiring someone. And often he would find the answer on YouTube.

Who am I going to text with when the Astros make a good or bad play during the next World Series?

I want to hear his voice again. I want to go over and cut his hair again. I want to make him another pie for his birthday and Father’s Day.

It hurts so much.

I love you Daddy.
