This Is Going To Be Challenge

My Stepdaughter’s room.  I’ve kind of been dreading this post showing you the before pictures because I don’t want to hear how we should have done the kids’ room’s first when we moved in here since the rest of our house is so pretty, yada yada (there are also plenty of undecorated areas besides the kids’ rooms too).  Yes, I know we should have done their rooms a long time ago (the truth hurts).  I did feel bad about it, and luckily the kids aren’t traumatized or anything and are happy and appreciate their nice rooms now.  I didn’t have any idea where to begin in their rooms if I’m being honest, but now the ball has begun to roll.

And if you are wondering, the boy’s room is pretty much done if I could only find some yellow lamps and a few other accessories! So until then I can’t show it. :)

But anyway, back to my stepdaughter.  She is almost 15, and that is a really challenging age to decorate for if you ask me.  It’s like teen to adult decorating.  And I’ve never done it before, so I’m just rolling with the punches and trying to get a feel for what she wants.

So here are the before pics of her room.

Yes yes, I know.  But there is something happy to report at least.  She did say she wanted the walls a dark purple, so I did finish that last week.

It’s a dark purpley-grey and it’s really pretty.  And she really likes it!  It makes the room look so much bigger too.  Now I’m not going to lie–purple isn’t one of my favorite colors.  But I do like this purple.  And no offense to the purple lovers out there.  :)  At least she picked a popular color right now so it shouldn’t be too hard finding things to match in here.

But there’s a lot to do, like:

  • paint the furniture (or sell this furniture and get something else?)
  • get new bedding
  • hopefully buy a new mattress
  • get new light fixture
  • hang some curtains
  • win the lottery

And many more little things.  We already upgraded her t.v. also to a nice LCD flat screen so the big ole’ tube t.v. is gone! Yay! P.S.-flat panel t.v.’s are pretty cheap these days!

She didn’t care about having any special wall moulding like I did in the boy’s room, which makes it easier for me. :)  So we’ll just play it by ear and see how things progress and of course I’ll keep you updated. :)

Oh, the paint color is another Behr color (sorry Stephanie T!) and it’s called “Arabian Veil.”

If any of you have posted about your teens rooms feel free to add a link to that post in the comments section so we can all check them out! And if you don’t see your comment posted right away it’s because there may be too many links in it, but don’t worry-It’s just being moderated and I’ll approve it when I can.

xxoo,

I think the purple/gray color is really pretty, too! You would never hear from me that you shoulda-coulda done this or that before now. I don’t do that to people and besides, you are very talented with decorating, creating that what you do always turns out awesome. I can’t wait to see more pics!

I did my 13 year old niece’s bedroom last summer and it was challenging. Like you, we had a jumping off point – medium ocean-teal (for lack of a better description). Then we shopped for the comforter and accessories. She still wants to add some decal wall quotes which I’ll probably do for her when we go up this summer. Here’s the reveal.

Love the color Emily. Oh, and Target just got a line of home decor items in that are purples/fuschias, etc. Very pretty!

Purple is not one of my favorite colors either. I do however, love the color you put up on the walls! BTW, my Home Goods had yellow lamps a couple of weeks ago, my first thoughts were “these would be cool in a teen/kid room” so, if they’re still there next time I stop by I’ll take a picture and send it to you.

Girl, if you see them BUY them and I’ll come sprint over there and give you the money. Or we can meet at Bob’s for a snow cone. :)

Very cool color — I like it — can’t wait to see the transformation!

RE: lamps for the boy’s room — could you spray paint some lamps yellow? just a thought (you’ve probably already pondered it tho!)

PS – do you know of any blogs/websites — where I can post pics and get feedback/suggestions on a room I want to “re-do” on a budget? :) if so, can you message me? thanks!

Hey Traci, yea, I can’t even find any old lamps to spray paint that I like. I don’t know why I am being so picky but I am.

Hmm, I’m not sure maybe HGTV? You can always post the pic to my facebook page too and I’ll ask everyone to chime in and help you figure it out. :)

Aww – you can be picky – it’s your house! :)

Thanks for the offer – I might hit your FB page up this weekend. So many projects, so little time… It’s been wonderfully warm here this week, so I have “visions” of my entry way, porch, whateva you want a call it… may post later tonight for “ideas”

You’re awesome! Keep the ideas coming!

You’re so cute. That is how I felt when I did my daughter’s pink room. Wasn’t a huge fan of painting it pink and now it’s my favorite room. I can’t wait to watch what you do! So fun.

My 7 year old wants Purple also. But her bedding is the PBK Barbie theme. I Love the bedding I don’t want to have to change it. Right now I’m going to leave it that beige color it’s been. I was thinking maybe doing their bathroom purple… We’ll see. Probably not as dark though. :D

This is challenging. I love the wall color. There are so many cool vinyl decals out there that would be fun. I did a fun mural of those for my stepdaughter’s room, but mine are easy…they are still very young so they love whatever. What about a fun chandalier vinyl decal?

Great colour! I think the furniture you already have in there is fine. Not babyish, although I suppose you could paint it. I wouldn’t replace it.

OH WOW! That color is gorgeous!!! I’m a big purple fan =) I like the furniture, I say paint it. Maybe black with some funky drawer pulls for the dresser. Don’t feel bad about waiting to do the kids rooms. My step daughter didn’t want hers done. “It’s my room and I want to hang up posters” . Worked for me =)

We have a purple bedroom. Perhaps it was because I was only 20 when we got married, and it was the early 2000’s (or I am just crappy at picking paint colors) . Whatever…anywho… it is the most awful shade of purple. Ever. It has been dubbed the grape ape room. It reminds me of grape Laffy Taffy. Yuck! Your step daughter’s room is a MUCH prettier shade!

I love the purple! Paint the furniture and have some fun in there with her! I actually found decorating my teen daughter’s bedroom a fun, penny-pinching experience for us to do together. :)

Wow can I ever feel your pain! See we have three boys ages (almost) 12 to 17. Who knew that decorating for this age could be so difficult ? Plus the 12 and 15 yr old share a room and none of them are into sports decorations.

I love this color purple and I am NOT a purple fan! The furniture has nice lines and would look great painted either black or white with some funky pulls/knobs. Target does have some great looks for a teen girl that would work well with this color. Good luck! I am sure you will come up with something lovely!

Thank you Peggy! I am loving everything at Target right now. They have a cool lamp that would be perfect in her room too. I may have to splurge.

I love the new color. I have an old rocker that looks similar to the chair you have pictured that I just had reupholstered and painted a creamy white.. I think that chair could look awesome with some updated fabric and painted.. just a suggestion. Can’t wait to see what you do with the space!!

Oh, I feel your pain! I have a stepdaughter as well who is offering up some crazy ideas. First it was neon green and hot pink with peace signs, then zebra print and turquoise, and now her room is such a mess all the time, it seems pointless to do anything LOL

I’m sure your stepdaughters bedroom will turn out wonderful :)

2 months later, and it’s still hard. So very har 2 months later, and it’s still hard. So very hard. It is the strangest, most emptiest feeling one could have, and one that not everyone understands.

Tonight was the 3rd griefshare meeting that I’ve attended, and that does help to be around others who have lost someone close. But it is also so painful hearing their stories. And it’s a night during the week that I’m forced to think about how he’s no longer here. It’s helped me to realize all of the thoughts and actions we have are normal, and the things we do that are odd to others, are actually part of the process.

I haven’t been able to wear these shirts of his yet (he wore them every single day. The red one was his “fancy” one), but I’m glad I have them. It’s just really crappy I can’t see him in them any longer. 💔

I watched him take his final breath at 7:24 this morning. The scent of him is still so palpable.

Gone too soon, and years stolen from his wife and grandkids.

We live in the same small neighborhood, right around the corner on the next street. Now the girls can’t ride their 4-wheelers to go see him. We can’t just swing by to pick him up. He can’t go on our walks anymore. There are lots of no-longers, and it is crushing my heart.

Who am I going to call now when I have a question on how to fix something? He had a solution for everything usually saving us hundreds of dollars. Everything was fixable to him, rather than hiring someone. And often he would find the answer on YouTube.

Who am I going to text with when the Astros make a good or bad play during the next World Series?

I want to hear his voice again. I want to go over and cut his hair again. I want to make him another pie for his birthday and Father’s Day.

It hurts so much.

I love you Daddy.
