Bedskirts are never long enough, right? It drives me nuts. Like, seriously nuts.
Well, we got a new duvet for Christmas (thanks Mom!), and our old brown bed skirt wasn’t going to match, plus it was too short. And I didn’t want to buy a new one right now, so I thought about what I had around the house that could be used as a bedskirt. And then, a lightbulb moment…I remembered I had 2 white curtain panels that I am not using right now just sitting upstairs.
So I laid the panels lengthwise and just tucked underneath the mattress (yes, you’ll have a lot of material tucked under your mattress).
And the curtain panels were the perfect length leaving plenty of room to make a few pleats and have the bedskirt flowy.
See, it actually hits the floor!! That makes me happy. And this couldn’t have been easier, and it was free. That was the best part. And if you don’t happen to have any spare curtain panels laying around like I did, an old flat sheet would work just as well. If there is any detailing on the sheet, just let that be on the bottom like I did with the curtains. Easy peasy! I think this is a good solution at least until I can get a real bedskirt, or until I need my curtain panels back. :)
I snapped these photos really quick while I was making the bed, so it’s not perfect. I’m currently working on a few updates in our master bedroom, so you’ll see it all together soon, along with the new duvet which I love! Well, you’ll see it soon if this doesn’t end up being a big project, which I’m sure it will since everything else seems too. :)
But anyway, aren’t short bedskirts annoying??!
P.S.-putting a duvet cover on has to be the most difficult and frustrating chore. I’d rather be doing 20 loads of laundry.

Lovely. And yes, you have to post a tutorial on those. My oldest son and his friend (and oldest daughter’s boyfriend) are coming here on leave at the end of January, just before son deploys for Iraq. So I want to make stocking for them. I want son to be able to take his with him as he will be in Iraq next Christmas and the BF as a welcome to our house.

I learned some time ago an easy way to put on a duvet cover so here goes…lay duvet on bed and place duvet cover inside out directly on top of it with all corners of cover and duvet matching up, put your arms inside the cover and reach for the far corners in front of you and grab a hold of the duvet(if you’re standing at the foot of the bed you’ll be reaching for the corners at the head of the bed), pull the cover and duvet together and shake it out the rest of the way or have someone slide the rest of it down. Your cover should now be right side out with the duvet inside.

Nice work! I have a severe dislike of bed skirts (on my own beds, I have nothing against them in general!) because they get all bunchy and covered in dog hair and taking them off to wash them (and the subsequent ironing they require) drives me absolutely bonkers. Which is a long way to say, I banished them from the house years ago. I use a fitted sheet on my boxspring instead!
(And, we have brown recluses here, and they love to crawl up bed skirts onto the bed. Eek!)

Great minds think alike! I was doing the very same thing today. I bought the panels to sew a bedskirt out of (cheap way to buy fabric) but I hadn’t had time and company arrives tomorrow. :)

My hubby and I did something similar to this using a drop cloth that we cut in half. Just safety pinned it to the box spring. Looks fabulous!

I have been buying the bedskirt and duvet one size larger than the bed, i.e. king size for a queen bed, so that everything is long enough. I then used the no sew tape to iron the bedskirt in place on the box springs because the only thing more annoying than a too short bedskirt, is one that moves around alot. Great idea for reusing curtains, I may have to try that one.

I bought a duvet cover on Overstock.com & it has little slits at the top right & left side of the duvet so you can actually hold the comforter in place while fluffing it out. Soooo easy!! If you’re desperate, maybe you can cut holes out yourself & hem them to look like they were made that way?
now that’s a genius idea. I don’t want to cut the new duvet though!
Emily- curtain panels are so smart! I just did a similar thing today on my son’s bed. I took a twin bedspread (that had shrunk in the wash tooooo much) and placed it over the box spring. It worked out perfect! (btw-I’m a new follower!) Thjanks for the great ideas!
I made a bedskirt for my daughters bed using the tutorial from Beneath my Heart. Easy Peasey, comes off great for washing and no moving the mattress.

The easiest way to put a duvet cover on is to lay the comforter on the bed. Turn the duvet inside out and lay on top. If your cover is fancy enough to have ties, tie them, then flip. Mind you its still not super easy it’s just easier. :D
